Back when I was buying quite a few BMW parts IBMWR want ads was my venue of choice. I wasn't doing Ebay then, but IBMWR would still have been my choice. No fees is a big deal.

Plus there is also the opportunity to pick up a real bargain on the IBMWR want ads. On Ebay there are a lot of people looking at stuff so your chances of picking up something very cheaply are slim. This advantage is offset by the fact that there is no recourse on a transaction gone bad on IBMWR.

I did get burned a couple times on IBMWR, but I expected some of that going in with my eyes open. It was a risk I was willing to take because there was a chance of snagging some extraordinary bargains. And I did snag some like a set of 40mm Bing carbs for $40. I've also bought a couple parts motorcycles and at least one swinging ATE caliper dual disk conversion makings through IBMWR.

There were scammers on IBMWR then and I assume there still are. Often you can spot a scam. Scammers don't like to work for their ill gotten gains. The tip off is sometimes a boiler plate response. Sometimes it's as simple as, "I have what you want in perfect condition for $XXX. (It was strange to me how my lust for something caused me to gloss over the odd nature of the response.)

I suppose there is also a concern that you're giving out a real email address and of course a physical address to unknown people if a deal is "made". After all, I already had a lot of cool airhead stuff and I wanted to keep it. I was aware of that, but I chose not to get paranoid about it. What I did do was continually tell myself to "sharpen up" in the sense that I was dealing with unknown people.

I wish I snagged an advance unit for $10! I am going to start rebuilding as many /5's as I can so I'm always on the hunt for more parts. I am also an owner of a /2 so i'm on the lookout for /2 goodies too.

FWIW - The Parts Haus was just offering his entire collection of airhead parts (a month ago) but his asking price was through the roof. I would love to buy an entire lot though. someday.

I have had good luck with buying and selling on IBMWR. Ebay definitely has more exposure and sometimes you can fetch better prices but the Ebay and Paypal fees are killing me. I'd rather sell direct and IBMWR is my first choice.

jj, then you better start looking on eBay. I will be parting out my /5 franken bike soon, maybe in the next weeks. You would faint to see just how many parts didn't bring squat on eBay.

No, I don't take any direct orders. I don't even answer email asking if I have some part. When I pull it out of the box, then I list it. Mostly I don't know what I have.

I am also selling a lot of very good power tools. They are too large to ship, so I won't list on eBay, only on Craig's List and require pick up.

Right Duane, it seems a shame for you to tear the bike down to sell the pieces, when one of us would be buying them to put it back together. If you sold it as complete look at all the time it would save. And it would fit into doing nothing.

The bike is a franken bike. I just put together any part in order to get what I wanted to ride. I forgot what the frame is, but I think it is a R60/5. It is LWB. The block is R60/5 with a 750 cc top end. It has very few miles on the block, maybe 30 k. The trans is one of my best ones. The forks are made up of good parts, some from a R80GS. I used the drum brake, as it is better than the single disc and less fuss. It has no wiring harness, only the few wires needed to run. It has no turn signals, horn, speedo, tach or front brake stop light switch. It isn't legal, or close. It has no starter motor, I just keep it in very good tune and it starts with a gentle kick. It does have a ride-off stand.

I just made up a decent handling light weight bike for my style of riding. That was when I rode fast, now I don't even ride.

Nobody would want this combination of parts, so I will just part it out. Yes, some hassle, but I recently sold some 275 items on eBay. I have lots more, but not BMW stuff, mostly Ham radio items.
