Yes, timing is critical. Bean can adjustment is rather sensitive as well. Need a good timing light. A couple of fans is also good. The f timing is the most important so I like to set that first. Then just see where idle is after.

PS, I would check that the "bean can" is correctly assembled. I replaced it with a fully electronic system.

Checked that a few times already.

I have a theory that the HES was replaced in the past with a wrong type which has much longer rise and fall times. A few weeks ago when the bike started to cut out the HES failed and at the same time the stator failed too and the voltage spikes killed the ICU.

Still waiting for a stator from Germany and a type HKZ101 Hall Effect Sensor from Bulgaria. Couldn't find either from Finland.

Replaced the HES and got it running, idles better than ever. Can get timing adjusted to Z no problem, but it won't show an S when back to idle, not anywhere close. Runs fine, so I'm not going to do anything about it just yet.

I guess "idles better than ever" and "runs fine " are subjective statements.
There is definitely something wrong with the advance mechanism in your beancan. Maybe you should look for a used beancan.

Yep. I will try to find a good deal on points in a can, ditch the original wiring harness and handlebar controls incl. speedo and do all the wiring from scratch with new handlebar & controls. That way I know where the issue is if I encounter one.
