I am also on both sides of this. Though I do know that the stock 2010 H.D. Ultra Classic is no were near as quiet as a 2002 R1150RT.I like a little sound from my pipes, but I am afraid that some take it a bit to far. They say that just about every thing in life is good with moderation.

A loud noise when it is needed is just great, say an air horn. I had an airhorn on one BMW and it seemed to levitate cars right out of my way. I seldom needed it. I could go weeks in SF and not use it. My bike had stock mufflers, so was quiet.

So, you wish to have a motorcycle drive by your house at 2 am with a "moderate" amount of exhaust noise? I think that none is far better.

I have never heard a bystander complain that a motorcycle was too quiet, but the opposite gets comments often.

Now, lets discuss airplane exhaust noise, or the variable pitch prop.

Suppose I'm a bit bias, but Harleys really grate on me, and so do Japanese bikes, both Sports & Enduro type.
But, ahhh, there's nothing like that sweet sound of a British twin!!

the sound or a wound up twin is good for me. There are Harley mufflers that make the bike almost as quiet as a BMW. Those straight pipes grate on me regardless of the bike they are on.

I live very close to a secondary highway that gets more than it's share of "hot-rod" traffic.
The sound that hurts most will be noise for the sake of noise at the expense of tuning.
A well tuned engine, as loud as it may be, will always be music to me ears !

Wouldn't it be just loverly
if we had no bigger fish to fry than noise on the street ?

Are you changing your exhaust to improve the performance of your engine, or just to make the sound different?

That's the distinction between poseurs and enthusiasts.

These customs with short pipes are advertising a lot, but not delivering the goods:

Motorcycles are limited in how much the exhaust can be tuned for ultimate torque range due to the limits on exhaust length caused by the limited length of the bike itself. "Spaghetti headers" are one tactic attempting to solve that and provide longer exhausts within the limited length of the bike. GP bikes are tuned for peak HP at the expense of lots of lower rpm power, and they still run exhausts right out to the tip of the rear end of the bike.

Running "shorty" exhausts is a purely aesthetic choice that cannot be defended from a performance standpoint.

So why would you do it?

Because you feel like lighting off an M80 firecracker every other second?

This definitely qualifies you for H.D. envy/ownership.
