That appears to actually be copper anti-seize. If so, it may or may not be effective for that application, but it's not what it was designed for.

I'll second that (copper ant-seize appearing) notion. Also keep in mind the tiniest amount of grease can cause instantaneous lock-up on any brake. I'd also be worried with that much crap on there that washing the disc down after assembly would cause that greasy looking stuff to wash onto the disc; but perhaps not...
I might also add, the copper anti-seize has its place, but while working on our mostly aluminum BMW's, I would move the copper paste behind the aluminum looking paste in your cabinet as the interaction between the copper paste and anything (BMW or otherwise) aluminum is a no-no...

I hope it's tenacious because there sure is a lot of it!
Yeah, I was surprised when I opened it up. There's gobs of it, but none on the friction surface of the pad. It looked well contained where it was applied.
Anyhow, all gone now and replaced with a specific brake rubber grease in a more sensible amount.

What is "specific brake rubber grease?" Where does such grease go?

It goes where the copper stuff is...over the rubber seal that protects the piston and caliper bore. It keeps the seal supple and prevents it drying out I guess. It can also be smeared over the rear of the brake pads as that area interfaces with the seal surface anyhow. Brembo can supply this grease or any old brake rubber grease from your local autoshop will do. I use this...

Just curious, where did those instructions originate from?

The ones in the picture? I did 'em. It's how the local BM privateer shop does them, and how Motobins suggest it gets done too. They sell a small package of grease to go with the seals and pistons in the kit.
It's also suggested and claimed that a dab of grease on the back of the pad can stop brake squeal.

I know better than to try and help here, but on the flip-side I am amassing quite a lot of material for my book. lol

Wow...8 pages on squealing brakes....
I'm afraid to ask this...but ...here goes....
My rear wheel disc brake "hums" when I push the bike backwards....about B flat I think....
Any ideas on cause/remedies...perhaps F sharp would be nice.
Oh yea, bike is 82 RS with, obviously a rear disc that sings....
I await the choir

How often do you push your bike backwards? I suggest the best way to avoid that noise is to ride the bike - forward!
