Boxerworks.com

As a prelude to our Oz Boxerworks Spring gathering last weekend ME109 and I arranged a week without the burden of werk. It also happened to coincide with a very nice, mostly warm and sunny weather window. Both bikes were also in fine fettle and ready to roll.

I headed off on Thursday 12 October, well overloaded with food, booze and sufficient clothing and sleeping comfort to cope with cold mountain conditions and the expected warmth at the coast:



I set up camp for two nights at a favourite spot at Geehi:



There is still white stuff on the hills there. It's in a National Park and is like a 'roo resort (Roosort?) with a lot of good feed and little stress for a couple of mobs of Eastern Greys:



Jeff dropped in on his way to meet up with his brother and a few others for a pub stay at Bombala. Note that his bike is also carrying a bit of a load:



For ZM here's a couple of pics of what he charmingly calls our 'mutant rabbits'. This poor mother is carrying a huge joey. It is so big that its hind legs will no longer fit in its bedroom ...

On with the tour. After two nights at Geehi I pushed on over the mountains to the coast, meeting up with Jeff and others at Picnic Point - another favourite camping spot in a National Park. There are no signs to help find this place - the locals remove them to keep it as secret as possible, bless 'em. Here's a pic of one of the beaches taken on a previous trip:

We spent two nights there then moved on to Wingan Inlet on the south coast. It was getting hotter so a good shady camping site was very welcome.



Jeff is a keen fish botherer. I am too, but am more interested in catching fish that happen to be involved in a feeding frenzy rather than going to actually find them. The Waders of the Fisherman:



The local inhabitants include these guys - the Goanna gang:



They were pretty useful for dishwashing and site cleaning services. They lurked all day - the largest was around 1.5m (5') long. Not very nice animals but apparently good for keeping snakes away.

We did two nights at Wingan. Very nice place with a broad estuary that appeared to be completely devoid of fish. The road in is 34kms of quite rough dirt with some scary wheel-swallowing pot-holes, so gentle riding is recommended. Here's a pic taken on the way out when we stopped for a breather:

Yeah, if you want some good comedy get a bunch of motorcyclists fueled up with beer and wine to help you diagnose an electrical problem with your bike. Jeff's alternator wasn't charging - you can almost hear them thinking ...



Problem was officially diagnosed as "charging system is not working". That's ok, we were only about 400kms from home. Battery was charged overnight. So were we, now I come to think about it. An excellent meal, good booze and bullshit were organised. In the morning we cleaned up the house, packed and headed off in our various directions. For the mob going north we had the Omeo Highway to look forward to. It is basically around 250kms of nicely engineered twisties.

1600kms in total, ten days in all. Now, a couple of weeks later, I wouldn't mind doing it all again. O, and here's another pic of Brunhilde looking a bit dusty. She's still looking dusty.



A well loaded BMW is a joy to ride. These things were made to carry two substantial Germans, so you've got to load them sufficiently to appreciate how well they handle. Ships have Plimsoll markings to indicate the range of displacement. I reckon our bikes could have something similar - marks on the forks and shocks to indicate optimum load.

Looks like a grand time was had by all. Charlie, I can't believe the amount of stuff you pile on your R90.
