Buddy just called, wondering if the standard RT fork wipers (with the felt inside) need to be lubricated. Do they, and what would you use for lubrication if they do? My instinct would be not to lubricate them.

Only switch to a synthetic oil if you are installing new felts.
That makes no sense.

I've always installed then with a light wipe of fork oil around the inner diameter. Importantly, I also clean the fork legs given any opportunity eg seal changed/oil change.

I would change to a synthetic regardless. Many of the fork internal wear parts are no longer available from BMW. They need to last as long as possible.

The subject is about the felt on the exterior of the fork. This is not a question of fork oil.

And ZM, my comment was totally tongue-in-cheek, as if you really needed it explained.

Well Wobbly took it as a fork oil issue. I thought it was a joke. Could have used an emo gee or sumptin.

Wobs didn't take it anywhere. It all right where you left it.
Don't try to sidetrack us... The subject of this thread is about the felt.

So, Wobbly, do you lubricate the felts?
I don't think I ever did, myself. I could see where it would be a good idea to lower stiction.
