A nice video bearing in mind that it's an advert not an instructional...

I just finished cleaning the carbs on my R100. I debris that was in the mixing chamber was black. I run very fine inline filters so I conclude this is the lines degrading. It is important to change the lines to an alcohol resistant type.

Last year I scored a few parts including a pair of 40mm BINGs.

Today I gave the Bings a clean and inspection. They weren't too bad externally. Here's one completed and one still to do.
Image

After dismantling, everything got a scrub and some bath time in a small ultrasonic cleaner. It did a great job...I used a tablespoon of truck wash detergent, warm water and a generous dash of vinegar. The carb body needed to be turned a few times to get all sides.

I removed the butterflies to inspect the o-rings and they were good. The small screws holding the butterflies weren't peened at all so I'm guessing the gunk on them was locktite blue. I cleaned and reused and reapplied new locktite blue. I'll buy some red loctite and redo when I get the new o-rings. Should I have used new screws and peened them or will they be ok unpeened and locktited?

I'd read recently that the butterflies were marked at 12 o'clock on the outlet side to enable easy identification of correct orientation but mine didn't have such a mark. They did have 10 marked onto them but they were on the upper inlet side. Checking the profile to see the edges angled, not square, confirmed the position was correct as disassembled. Reassembled and reinstalled with a little silicone spray rubbed into the o-ring.

Other things found..one badly torn diaphragm. Replaced.

Main jets were 150's which are listed as from 90/40/125 & 126 Bings. These were 90/40/123 & 124 Bings which should have 160's. They were from a R100RT and should be 160's. Replaced with 162's 'cause that's what I had spare..
The drilling for the the jet stack was filthy with dried gunk and that took some effort to clean well. The video in the initial thread post showed the guy using a power drill with a polisher in there. That'd be handy.

Needles were on the 2nd notch, moved to third...euro spec a tad richer than USA spec.
Needle jets were different. 2.64 & 2.66, now both 2.66.
Atomisers were full of dried gunk but easy to clean and reuse. They were reinstalled carefully to ensure they seat into the carb throat.

Choke assemblies were removed and the gasket inspected. All good so reused.
One of the mixture screw o-rings was split so got replaced. The other was fine so just got a rub of silicone spray.

Floats looked good, still white. Both float needles were unridged so were reused.

The whole thing is an easy task really. Just need a posidrive screwdriver (a philips usually fine), an 8 mm spanner (main jet), 10 & 11mm for other nuts you'll find.

The idea of doing one at a time is wise as there's always a good reference when uncertainty arises.

It's a very satisfying task to complete.

Yes, very satisfying... the only thing I would have done would be to replace all of thhe 'O' rings even if they aren't split. They wear and distort over the years so you may well get leakage... but then again, you may get away with it...

As for the screws, if they haven't been peened, then they are fine for re-use. Whether you need to peen them yourself is very much up to you and how much you trust loctite. If you peen them, then you have that issue should you need to remove them again in the future but, if you don't and one works loose, there's a very good chance you're going to seriously wish you had. Do ya feel lucky... well do ya? For what it's worth, I would peen them... but that's just me.

Thanks Rob. I probably would've replace the o-rings if I had them all. They're on order fr M'works.
When I get them, I'll install them and then peen those screws I think.
