Hello gang
I've had this itch for a while , and now a pair of R90s wheels might be within reach. I would like to fit them to my 1979 R80/7 to replace the snowflakes that came with the bike. I believe they're a straight fit. Is that right?

If you click on the part numbers for the spoked wheels on the R90S, it shows the range of models that part number goes with.

I believe that the rear wheels from the R90s can be fitted without problem to all other twinshock road models (with the obvious exception of disc brake models. The later front wheels can also be fitted without issues but there appears to be a possible issue with the wheels fitted to early R90s machines which used a thinner front axle (14mm as opposed to 17mm)up to 09/74.
The issue isn't particularly clear because I'm referring to a spare parts lists which tend to show the parts supplied by BMW at the time the list was produced, which may not be the same as those originally fitted to the machine. My earliest parts list is dated 1981.
My reading is that the earliest wheels were made to be fitted to 14mm axles. These were discontinued (don't know why) by 1981 and, if you needed to replace a wheel, you were supplied with a 17mm axle wheel and a supplementary conversion kit... basically a set of bushes to bush out the 14mm axle to 17mm.
What is the implication for you... If the front wheel you're looking at is for a 17mm axle, no problem. If it's an early wheel, I don't know if it can be easily made to fit. In simple terms, make sure that the wheel will fit a 17mm axle. If it does.. No problem.
