Sounds like either a bad/weak battery or a starter relay that isn't properly latching. What does the battery terminals read when you hit the starter button?

Hes, it's the solenoid making the noise. As Kurt says, the normal reason is a bad or discharged battery. Given that the battery is 'trying' to turn the engine, I would favour a diagnosis of a bad battery rather than discharged but not too adamant on that. Check also your battery leads and connections (at both ends).
Have the battery load tested, best done at an auto electrical shop. Modern load testers can tell you all you need to know about your battery (and a lot you don't). If the battery is good and the leads are good, then you need to consider rebuiding/replacing the starter motor. Not difficult to rebuild if you have basic skills.

I had similar issues and sounds, in my case it was due to a poor earth path on the relay, so unlatching the relay under load from the starter motor. The earth path runs via the neutral switch, replacing the neutral switch didn’t help so I used a jumper wire in the headlamp bucket to one of the earthing points to remove the neutral switch out of the starter relay circuit. Brook Reams has some useful info on his website on /6 circuits.
