I have one that looks pretty clean and tidy but the damper rod seems to move far too easy in and out.
Can these be opened and rebuilt?

Not that I'm aware of... I've looked before and concluded that the only way to get in would be to damage the case beyond use. I'd be interested if anyone could say they'd done it... and how.

FWIW, Motobins and Motorworks have them new in the UK for around GB£60. Motorworks will do you a used one for GB£25.

My /6 does alright without one. I used the ball joint ends from the dead one that was on my bike to make a remote shifter extension when I modded a right side footpeg so I could have same-set pegs.

It would seem that BMW agreed they weren't strictly necessary, as the /7 I'm working on didn't come with one.

I removed mine many years ago and never looked back.
