Welcommen.
Tell us where you are. We're a worldwide group here.
Is the bike a twin shock model? They finished in 84. The monoshock version then started from 86.
Stick your 7 digit vin number into here...www.realoem.com and you'll find out its month and year of manufacture and a whole bunch of parts fiche too.

It's a good idea to put your location in your profile (or signature). That way, you'll never have to remember to tell everyone and you'll get offers of help, meet ups, recommendations & etc.
As Steve has said, there were no 1000cc airhead boxers (officially) built between Oct 1984 and October 1986 (for the '87 model year) so it's unlikely to be an '85. It may, of course, have been sold and registered in '85 but it isn't a '85 model year bike because such things don't exist. It's important to know what you've got because the '84 model is very different from the '87 model and a lot of ways. Fortuinately, it's quite easy to tell because the earlier machine has a two sided swing arm (twinshock) while the later model has a single sided swing arm... but that's by no means the only difference. Despite the fact that they look similar and are based on similar technology, about the only major assembly that didn't change (much)was the gearbox.
Anyway, welcome to the forum. A lot of learning to do... If you've never had a BMW before, you'll find it very different in some (mostly good) ways to other bikes. There's loads of information and advice to be had her and in other forums... just ask.
