On my Mono 1988 R100RS I have the kind of rear carrier specifically designed for a top box, it connects down to the pannier frames.

It seems one time I over-tightened the top box because the carrier part is cracked all the way through.

My question is to those of you that know about metallurgy, which I do not: do you think this can be welded?

I have a decent MIG outfit and can weld steel, but that metal (of the carrier) is not one I'm familiar with - it's almost like a ceramic.

There may be another type of repair I can improvise.

If it's what I think it is, it can't be welded.
Depending on where it broke, and depending on your aesthetic vs. function threshold, you might be able to drill holes in it and fasten a few reinforcement plates either side of the break.
JB weld could then help solidify the repair, but it won't be pretty.
Might be easier to find a used one.

Thanks for confirming, it's an odd sort of material like a ceramic.

Drilling is not easy at that point so I will try to find a replacement here in the UK or Europe.
