Welcome! Nominally, a /7 will have 22mm bars/controls...not the same as 7/8". Don't think you're doing to be able to stretch the controls...might end up breaking them??

A 7/8" inch bar is .016" bigger than a 22mm bar that the controls were designed to fit.

I've only ever read that the 7/8" bars usually end up creating problems as owners try to make them fit, eg broken controls.
Whilst you've got the controls apart, if you didn't know, don't lose the small perch wedges that help them grip to the bars.

As a matter of interest, BMW stopped fitting the wedge from 1984 even though the control mounts stayed the same.. and so did the handlebars. Does make you wonder if they were really needed at all...

I wanted a flat bar, so I had to go with a 7/8 bar (couldn't find an actual 22mm flat bar anywhere). I measured and taped off where the controls would line up, and simply used my grinder to remove a little material to get them to fit. Only took 20 minutes and I am pretty pleased with the result.
