Generator & Ignition Cover R80/7

Happy Christmas All,
I have finished my R80 refurbish apart from a few adjustments one being ignition timing, as I will need to remove the front cover again I had something on the back of my mind on this cover, mine has ventilation slots two thirds down on each side where water can get in if it can get in it also needs to get out otherwise it will sit there and may get through the seal to where the ignition is.
Question is this and wanted opinion from long time owner's I am thinking of drilling a hole each side to let water out, these holes would be on the outside of the cavity for the ignition.
Stay safe and for those in the USA I hope the weather improves for you all soon
