Side Stand woes - too long!?

Does anyone know of a shorter side stand that is a direct replacement for the factory one? I have a 1980 R80 and the side stand seems to be at least an inch too long. Unless I park on completely flat ground (and even then sometimes), the stand hits the ground and I have to lean the bike the opposite direction just to deploy it. The bike is then left standing almost completely upright and could easily fall over.

Tips/ideas? Thanks!

Hmmm,

Not really an answer to your question but I have to express some surprise at your post and wonder if your earlier questions about suspension have some relevance.

Why surprise? The normal complaint about airhead sidestands is that they allow the machine to lean too far to the left. This applies to both the earlier stands fited pre '81 and the later stands to '84. With the Monoshock stand, the lean isn't quite as marked. In essence, it would seem that either your bike is sitting too low (which could be due to the afore discussed stiction) or the stand is out of spec... bent, perhaps or modified by a PO.

Getting to the point... if the issue is with the suspension, an aftermarket stand probably isn't going to help much since it will be designed for the same ride height as the BMW stand.

In your position, I would want to take some measurements to determine the off load ride height then post them with an explanation of where the measurement was taken (I would suggest the vertical distance from the ground to the bottom yoke (triple tree)) so that others can give you cmparison measurements. If there is still an issue with the suspension, the answer isn't to replace the sidestand...

Metric sized tires have a smaller radius and the whole bike will be lower. I discovered that with my /7 noticing that the bike was nearly vertical when the bike was on the side stand.

I definitely recomment the Surefoot sidestand, easy to install, sturdy and works with my Reynolds Ride-Off center stand
