G'day blokes, I've met Doug a few times. He brought a couple of bikes to the 'Classic Motorcycle, Lawn Mower & Rotary Hoe Show' I was involved with years ago. He often pops up at motorbike events around here. He's an, um, interesting man. He's ridden millions of miles all over the world and has recorded every single one of them in his log. I'm pretty sure he recorded how far he pushed his bike from his trailer into the hall where the show was held. Did Australian Story talk about the SBS doco series 'Grey Nomads'. They did an episode on him riding around India. If I remember correctly he fell off and broke a bone but insisted on continuing to ride. Tough as nails.

I thought there were hints in the show that suggested there was a wider story to tell. Starting with the orphanage thing, his son made some comments alluding to his manner. Tough, but distant was a feeling I got. He seemed genuinely surprised that anyone would offer him assistance. I wondered if he thought he deserved it all? I was glad to see he grew to enjoy more than just the ride though.

Yep ,it looked as though this big round Oz ride had opened his eyes to people's generosity .He was amazed that strangers would welcome him into their homes .

Yep he seemed like a grumpy old hard fella that just loved bikes...........

I got that the son resented the bikes growing up as a young kid as his dad was always off riding when the chance arose, it's one thing to work like a dog all ya life but family comes first always.

I look at it like this, you get 20yrs to raise a family, set them up for success and see them on their way and then 40yrs to rep the rewards of your goals, hobbies, contentment, hugs and kisses from the grandkids & family, well that my plan away

Actually Grant , i reckon the son was quite happy to see Dad away on his bike ...as a boy .Some Dad's are better out of the house .

Yeap I suppose so mate, I also heard his son say that the house was quieter and more relaxed with him away, that I find a bit sad and probably deep down the son was wishing he was on those trips with his dad, bonding and not left behind or the whole family off doing something fun together away from the shitty home & busy work enviroment, i find that selfish that only one gets to go, each to their own I guess but not for me....
