Two subjects: New Members and Spam

New Members
Is it just me, or has anybody else noticed an upsurge of new members posting? I'm talking about the Post 1970 Airhead list here since I haven't been paying much attention to the other forums in this regard.

To me this is a healthy and refreshing development. I'm speculating that the reason is that this forum is a more friendly place to be. Certainly during the contentious period I don't remember seeing new members coming on board, and some posters who had left start posting again.

And to me the important thing is that this is happening without heavy handed rules and control (unlike a certain musical instrument makers forum that I visit only when I have to). Another healthy thing.

Spam
Unfortunately, as a moderator, I'm seeing a significant amount of spam posts. If I understand the process correctly nobody sees any new post until a moderator approves it. Typically I was dealing with 1,2, or 3 spam posts per day. Since I'm in Idaho right now I'm seeing fewer of them because I'm tuning in to Boxerworks only sporadically.

So if I'm correct in my thinking it would seem that the moderator approval (and banning) thing is working well for Boxerworks. So far, fortunately, I've only seen spammers on the Speakeasy forum.

I spam equally between the BMW motorcycle part and the speakeasy part. Must I now decide where to not spam?

I too am very glad to see the change.

My father is a Neigerian Prince who cannot take his money out of the country. If you can lend me your BMW I can ride there and get it and give you a %.

I've been zapping spammers the past couple of weeks at the rate of one per two or three days. They get a permanent ban and their post zapped. Funny, most post a brief bio, me thinks, thinking they'll get by with posting their ad bilge.
Fat chance.

And on the other nicer note...yes, it's great to see new names pop in here at the forum. When things are (usually) quiet around here, it's a great airhead place to hang around to feed the beemer fix. :P

It has changed, that's for sure.

I came here for advice, stayed for the banter. The advice has suffered by the loss of Funholiday and GSPD. There's an irony there for sure. The banter is all but gone. And, in my experience, the advice has suffered along with it.

It should be clear to long timers who I am and what I find appealing in this forum. It seems to have lost a lot of flavor along with the change in personalities. I am aware that some people want white bread, skippy's and smuckers but I like something more akin to coarse wheat bread, organic almond butter and sliced fruit. My ideal sandwich has substance.

I think Matt has done a great job by creating the Speakeasy to keep the opinionated stuff from diluting the advice aspect of the site. For some, that was not enough. They want mamby pamby all the way through from the core to the crust. Fine. I'll try to roll with it but it suffers, as if from a lack of Tabasco.

In an attempt to not be misunderstood I will say that some of the vitriol was hard for me to take but I liked the aspect of the forum where, on the Speakeasy, we would discuss current events and many posters would chime in. That made for some interesting and thought provoking discussions. Those who just couldn't handle the opinions of others were always a drag on real discussion but that was a factor that dragged down, but didn't spoil the forum. It was just a bump in the road. The way the Speakeasy is now, discussing unimportant fluff, mostly, is a downgrade in my opinion.

I would have never thought the mamby pambies would prevail. If more new people is the goal, and that leads to more new people, then this may be a good thing. Still, I'd rather discuss current events on the Speakeasy rather than surgically implanted breasts. I say that because those are the posts that are getting the most responses. Is that really an improvement over heated discussions of the past?

I am visting again and I had checked out for a long time. It had gotten very tiring. Opinions are great and there are still plenty here. Mutual respect is a reqirement and that had gone away and seems to have returned. I don't think that makes for white bread.

I didnt' know that they had to be surgically implanted. Here, all along, I thought that they grew naturally.

I do not think the advice has suffered from the loss of Fun. While he had some good and useful information, it was peppered with ignorant and destructive misinformation as well, and he would never consider the possibility that it was wrong.

So, on balance, I don't think the weight of his technical contributions tilted toward the positive.

Why can't we discuss bobbies and current events? Tits have always been a subject of great interest on Boxerworks! How about tradition! Also, we ride bikes with big opposed jugs, they get hot, they sweat!

Also I'm here to learn. I lack Gaydar and the ability to access boobs without touching them. But I have grounded my diode board....big time! :D

It's obvious that B-Works took a hit a ways back but IMO it was caused by the constant heated arguments and the general air of discord on the board. Who wants to hang out on a chat board, where several guys you don't know are fighting every night? I don't! In fact, I think that that kinda sucks and thats probably why several long time posters left, never to return.

Sure, this place has lost some of it's flavor but that flavor left a bad taste in a lot of mouths, including mine. If new voices are showing up regularly, it's probably because those new guys have found a place thats more welcoming and relaxed than it used to be and lets face it, this place exists as part of Matt's business promotion. Therefore, having a bunch of bored old men arguing all night, probably wasn't working very well for him either.

As some of you know, I switched 'home boards' a couple or three years ago, for several reasons but I'm hoping that this place has a renaissance of it's own. To me, B-Works was really humming maybe five or six years ago. I really liked it back then! It was a fun place to hang out, we all learned stuff and we most always had a good time . Maybe that spirit will return but only time will tell and I'm not holding my breath!

Chuey... If you really miss Funholiday, you can find him over at advrider.com posting in "Olds Cool" under the screen name "Supershaft". Same guy, same MO, same-o, same-o.

PS: Probably the worst thing about the Speakeasy section is how little use it gets. Having a place where we can discuss anything we want to, including politics and boob sizes is great but theres not much happening there yet. I don't hang out in there much because I don't like arguing for arguments sake. Thats a complete waste of time but who knows... Maybe someday, there'll be some real good stuff going on in there. I hope so.
