neutral switch, no start?

I took my bike for a ride this evening and stopped to take in the view from the top of the hill.
When I went to start again I hit the starter button and nothing. No sound no nothing.

I was showing neutral. Verified it by moving the bike. tried again....nothing.
Shifted into first, into second, back to neutral to see if I was getting a false neutral.
still nothing.
Messed with the cables to the switch...
Battery is good, alternator is strong.

Lucky for me I was on top of a hill so I bump started it.

any ideas?

You didn't say if you tried starting it with the clutch lever pulled in. Did you?

I always start with the clutch lever pulled in, so yes.
I just went out there and it started fine.
I pulled on one of the neutral switch leads and one came off really easy.
I crimped it back down a bit harder so that it's on really good now. Maybe it was intermittent enough to not work. The N light was on solid though.

You may have found the problem with the loose wire. I occasionally have what I call a "lazy neutral light" on my R1100GS. If the light doesnt come on even if its in neutral and showing on the gear indicator on the dash, the bike will not turn over. Usually flicking the sidstand or changing gears up and down will get it to light, and away we go. And no I dont think its the sidestand switch as it should have nothing to do with the neutral light coming on.

Clean the contact on the start push button. Spray contact cleaner in around the button then press button and move it around some. I do this once or twice during the riding season.

I think I found it...combination of two things.
1. very loose neutral switch lead.
2. nearly dry battery. Had enough to light lights, not enough to even begin to engage the starter.
