Disc type breather to reed valve conversion

Hi Folks,

Had to bought some service parts etc. from Motobins for 3 bikes (local R100RS) and decided to get me one of those reed valves. Remember Kurt in SA advised me after I got lots of oil bypass in the air filter box.

Received the parcel within a week WOW!!
Now how the bliksem do I remove the old one?? The old forum down for searching and I rather skip Snowbums articles, way TMI. Sure some of you had done the modification?

Assume the cutout or groove of the reed valve must be at an angle?

Thanks as always!

This guy has a good tutorial on replacing the oil breather:

I've always wondered what's wrong with the old design? It could be improved by using a thin stainless or aluminum disk, rather than the pressed circut board stuff. Spring tension could be adjusted by adding more grooves to the post, or replacing the post with one that has threads for screwing a nut up and down.
I wish someone sold rebuild kits for them. They last a heck of a long time before problems occur. Failures are probably due to loss of spring tension or a chipped up disk. Mine is still going strong.
If you can hear it operating your bike is too quiet.

I don't see what's wrong with the newer reed type...BMW went to it eventually. It's down to one moving part, and barely at that. What's to go wrong??

I don't see anything wrong with the new one either. Simple is better in most cases. It's just that the old one could be easily serviced for a lot less money and effort. Just need some cheap parts (that aren't available).

Hi Kurt, I tend to think the PO used locktite or something on the breather, I've tried now couple of times with various methods to lift the disc up but to no avail. I've tried heat also.
I modified a small bearing puller with bent hardened nails but it pulls out every time. Tried also a home made slide hammer.
The PO used locktite even on the jets of the carburetors!
Something else you can maybe think of?

Regards
Johan

I carefully stuffed a small rag into the passage below the valve body then with a dremel, cut the ring which is pressed into the hole. The pressure was relieved and the part came out easily. The rag keeps the filings out of the block.
The body of the valve is aluminum like the block and will expand right along with the block when you try heat. It won't work the same as it would if the valve body was steel.

I ended up also making a slide hammer but I had to use a threaded rod bent back on itself to ensure a good grip on the old breather. Not sure if that website also shows a way to make a lever with a stick of wood. Put some rags on the back bone of the bike and rest the piece of wood on the rags. If the wood is 3-4 feet long, you'll get a lot of leverage.

But the slide hammer - shock aspect and a little heat around the base of the valve is really the way to go...a lot of energy can be transfered during each hammer.
