I know "the proof is in the pudding" but it will be a while until I test drive this rebuid.
It has been cold and sloppy outside since a major freak snow storm last week (and it's spring!).
Also I want to first put some hours on the spare that is now installed, but untested.
So, for those still interested, here's the poop...
The unit had developed excess crown/pinion backlash and I could wobble the wheel enough to both feel it and hear it.
- Replaced the huge ball bearing($!) on the crown gear with the freezer/oven trick.
- By measuring and guestimating with homemade inner shims I snuck up on the backlash adjustment.
- For those tests I used the old gasket.
- Waited about 10 days, twice, for shim delivery from Germany.
In the end -
- I have 2 inner shims left over (about $9 each).
- Backlash, as best I can measure, is .0046" - .0048" at the outer edge of the crown gear (spec is .0032" - .0055").
Did I unwittingly do something wrong or miss something?
Dunno?
Will the whole thing destroy itself or cook itself in short order?
Dunno.
Is the seal in correctly? Will it leak?
Dunno.
Time will tell.
These machines are fun aren't they?
Please say yes!

I've spent most of my money on women, motorcycles, and beer.
The rest of it I just wasted.
