I think I'm in need of a coil for my R80 ST .She has a weak spark and does like starting much this week .She will start ,run for a few seconds then die .I can't seem to improve the situation at all . On this thread Duane Ausherman strongly suggests a coil as the solution .
http://www.boxerworks.com/forum2/viewto ... g&start=10 .He also reckons one should cost US 50 to $70 ! My local supplier (Munich Motorcycles )just quoted me A$333 !!!
Way ,way too much !! I need an alternative ,preferably a cheaper one .HELP !

Hi Sibbo, sorry your spark is fading ...
A while ago, a wrecked Honda appeared in my yard, and I was able to strip off anything I needed. Very little came into that category, but I noticed the two coils were similar in appearance to my double-plugged RS's - so I put them on the shelf.
Would I be right in thinking that a coil is a coil is a coil ?
Or does it have to be a super-expensive BMW coil ?
As they are easy to replace, long-lived and unlikely to damage other components when they fail -
have you considered buying second hand ?

That may not be a bad idea , I have a bike wrecker /breaker in town who sells his stuff very cheaply .I'll wait for other inputs though .I wouldn't know if it's a good idea or not !

It is probably a good idea to match up the primary resistance, that is, the resistance across the coil terminals.
I have a couple of twin lead Jap coils, 1.5/1.6 ohm resistance - you can have one for the price of postage.
Might even have copper leads to go with them somewhere- its not like me to fling anything out.
Apart from the ex that is!.

Gavin ,would it be too much to ask you to check the resistance on your R80 coil to compare to the the Japanese version .I'd check mine but I suspect they're not at their best .
I bought 4 plugs today ,I'll fit them in the morning and see how that goes .

The Jap coils came on the G/S - it was twin plugged with a OEM electronic bean can, but I cant remember if they were wired in parallel or series.
I wanted a twin plug curve and as the Boyer Micro power included coils and leads for less than the alternatives which had neither it got the nod. Works better for me than the Omega too.
Haynes gives the primary resistance of the twin coil which goes with the electronic bean can as 1.15 to 1.32 ohms and the Dyna Brown 1.5ohm coil is widely used as a replacement, so I think the 1.5 ohm one would be OK.

Good guy to deal with.
You must make sure that the coil matchs the control module for your ignition. Lots of info at Mtorrad Elektric.

JOHN RAYSKI @ EME is a good fella, RICK @ motoelec too.
Motobins and Motorworks also excellent service and for 35 quid and post you'll have a dual pvl coil,
Second hand dual K coil might do the job.
The accel harley coil is small and is known to work too.
