Blank cover for tach cable on engine

I have an electronic tach on my bike ('74 R90) that was made to use mechanical tach.
I've just kept the rectangular rubber "grommet" in place so far, but it's about had it. (The rubber piece on the timing chain cover, held in place by the front cover.)
Looking for a more elegant cover and have thought of making an aluminum cover for it.
I've actually made an aluminum plate for the outside but now looking to mount it in the hole.
Thought of cutting the outside part off the rubber piece and attaching the aluminum outside I made to the rubber "inside" of the original piece.
Anyone do anything similar?
Snowbum says there used to be a BMW part for this purpose but it's NLA.
I would try my idea but my original rubber piece is so old and brittle it won't hold up to being worked on.
Anyone with a decent rubber one to pass on for experimentation?
