Tranny ID for missing Circlip

I would have put this on the other post, but it had degraded well beyond the point of no return. I've got an 84 tranny I want to put on my R90, along with the updated light clutch and 9 tooth starter. It's code number is Z-096005. I thought it was safe because it was an 84 since 85 to 95 transmissions were the ones that were supposed to be effected by the BMW clip-less design blunder. After reading Snow Bums article on the subject it now seems that some late 84 trannys were also effected. His article states that the codes for that year were......
1984: Z-084339 -> Z-104600
Does that make my tranny a late or an early 84? Does anyone know if transmissions made with numbers close to mine included the clip?

As far as compilation of tranny numbers related to the circlip, Snowbum's got the best information. Anton Largiader discusses the circlip on his website, but doesn't have the detail that 'bum has regarding tranny numbers.
Judging by your number and the range of numbers for 1984, yours is about 57% of the way through the run if 20K transmission made in 1984. That might be construed at mid-range and not late.
Then, when people bandy about dates are they talking model years or are they talking build years? I've seen some Snabb catalog information which shows that 1978 model year bikes were built as early as June/July 1977 so that bikes would be available for dealers beginning in September. It's kind of confusing with the dates.
Since you're on the cusp, I'd just keep an eye on things, especially the drain plug. If things changed dramatically, then it would be time to worry. IIRC, Snowbum and Anton discuss a way to "feel" if things are tightening up as another check.

I know what you're talking about. My 1976 R90 was built in Aug of 75. Lots of mixed components. Is August past 57% or were they cranking out more bikes later in the year? If production was more or less even then my tranny could be from as early as February or March of 84. I was just hoping somebody had an 84 tranny with higher numbers than mine that has a factory installed circlip.

Yeah, although everyone has their own opinion, I think the general consensus is that it doesn't make sense to tear down a fine functioning tranny just to do the circlip, and it doesn't make sense to put a torn down one back together without installing the circlip.
