Non starting update

My ST is still hard to start .It has a good spark and runs beautifully once going .Getting it going is the problem .I can't use any throttle at all and no choke .I just have to wind it and hope for it to catch .It starts and then dies after a few seconds .

If I do this a dozen times it will finally seem to catch ,sometimes not . She's going back to the mechanic as soon as I can get there , nothing missed at the moment as it's been raining for days .

All corrosion cleaned , new plugs ,leads and caps, coils fine , Hall Effect sensor OK I think .

Carbs are the probable culprit .They have been balanced and she runs perfectly once going !! WTF !

I'm not trying this one myself , it's right outside my mechanicing skills .

I'll keep you posted as results come in .

Sounds like your enricheners might be effed up. Or maybe the cable mechanism is not engaging the enrichener as you expect. Easy to check the cable for proper action; only mildly more difficult to rework the enrichener.

I can't touch the throttle or choke when trying to start ...it completely stops any possibility of a start ..

There are 4 different ways the enrichers can be installed on the carbys.
Only one way is correct.
The enrichers can't work if not properly oriented.

Does it restart ok once the engine is warm Sibbo? (when no choke is needed)

With cv carbs, I don't use any throttle, keep it closed until the engine catches and then pick it up on the throttle.

How long does it take for engine to 'catch'

It was wet yesterday , fine and warmer today . She started right up and idled at 250 rpm .Seems a low idle but smooth .

Are you using those original metal spark plug caps? Owning a BMW motorcycle repair shop in San Francisco told the story on those metal caps. The humidity is usually high and they just don't work.

We replaced all of them as standard procedure.
