Replacing seals in my final drive

A while back I posted some pictures of my leaky final drive (2008).
I bought all of the seals & gaskets to fix the problem, but other, larger issues got in the way.

A few weeks ago, I arrived at the Ohio Tech session and the first things folks said when they saw my bike was "you need to reseal that final drive!".

There is going to be a tech session here in Indiana on 7 May, and I am thinking of taking the project there.
Any advice? Special tools I will need? I believe I will need to take my heat gun to get the cover off?

Thanks.

Can the "compression ring" (#4) be reused?

How about the shim for the pinion gear? (#1)

I am thinking about removing the final drive from the bike and only taking that with me to the meeting, in case there are problems. It is a couple of hours distant.

I am also open to sending it off to a professional.

Don't forget the oil. :P

Unless it is noisey or has a lot of lash (backlash) you should no need to re-shim.

Since I have never resealed a drive I could keep my wise ass comments to my self.

Needing to ride the bike home might put pressure on you to rush the job and that might not be a good idea.

FWIW -
Don't know how similar your FD cover is to my Monolever.
Mine has 2 threaded holes (180deg apart) for 5mm bolts that when screwed in push against the housing thereby lifting the cover slowly out of its snug home in the housing. If that is the case, it is best to smooth the ends of the 5mm bolts you use so as not to chew up the spot they push against. If you still have to lever the cover, wood is friendly to aluminium, steel is not.

I checked all of my oils before I left for Columbus that weekend, and I checked the final drive before I left to return home! 8-)
