Omega Electronic ignition module...NLA!!

I've tried twice to order 2 of these kits over the last 6 months and today I got a note from the North American distributor that they are no longer carrying them as they havn't had responses from the German manufacturer in las t 3 months on back orders. Oh oh...

I know Stephen B was the original importer of these units and then another outfit FKN Enterprises picked it up. Stephen had built an excellent website for the Omega system. Very well done and thought out. Had a few e-mails back and forth about them with Stephen and he was always prompt and knew what he was talking about.

My friend has 2 of these systems (he ordered when Stephen was involved) and swears by them.

Anybody know of another distributor in North America? Anybody order one from the german manufacturuer?? I checked the German manf website but he still lists FKN Enterprises as NA distributor...Like to get them so maybe one of you German speaking guys can help me out?

I too was hoping to get a couple of those. I'll be watching this thread so I can learn what's up.

It might be worth contacting the manufacturers in Germany by telephone, when I was there some years ago there was someone around who spoke English. The web site is impossible, but with any luck should have a phone no.

They are a small independent BMW operation.

Thanks for the kudos, Moosehead.
I know I had to be after them some times but not like that. They could have discontinued the product as there are 6 or 7 manufacturer out there in Germany alone doing the same thing. Being a small operation, maybe there wasn't enough profit in it. Not filling backorders just doesn't sound good.

However, they do have a very widespread dealer network in Europe, maybe the Belgian or Dutch or English dealer is willing to ship to Northamerica (or to me Dad's) ... I will investigate as I wouldn't mind getting another one too! This is like Dec 2005 when we started with the first group buy!

Chasbmw thanks for the info. My wife speaks/understands German somewhat so I think I will give it a go and post back my results.

My oldest son is in Europe and was thinking that I would get them to ship to german address as that might help the cause.

This is a great system as far as I can see with the added advantage of leaving the old points sysyem in place as back up.

I looked at their website but see nothing about the ignition system but will call and see what's up. Maybe they might like to do a large order vs 1 small one? If some of the inmates are interested maybe can coordinate 1 order?

Now to get SKYPE fired up.

Stephen, glad you saw this!

There may be a good business reason/decision on their part as a small independent operation but I guess contacting them to find out might be the first step. I also have a german speaking (fluent) friend in KW whose also an airhead (you might know him Guenther Schwartz?) and he maybe able to help. So, I'll call maybe with Guenter and see what the lay of the land is.

Also, Henrik Petersen at Petersen Motoworks was trying to order some units. I'm heading over to Petersen's today and see what he's heard. He's been sitting on 4 or 5 units on backorder for various airheads in the shop as well...hmmmm....we'll get this sorted out somehow.

Do they list Belgian, Dutch or English distributors? I'll check their website again..that may be an alternative route to explore. My son is coming back to Canada end of May so I was hoping he could bring back some units if they're still making them. Maybe a group buy might spark their interest? It's a hassle but maybe worth it.
Thanks, Bob

PS: And your website explaining everything and gspd's diagrams were outstanding! Where is the "Mechanic from Hell" anyways...I miss him

It appears that the B+G Group has outsourced the manufacturing of the OMEGA ignition to a company named Zion (?). Feedback in the German BMW forums is so-so, the temperature range of the used hall sensor component is the biggest complaint: 0 ... 70C (commercial grade) just doesn't do it behind the engine cover. There is variation/tolerance which explains why some work and others don't. More expensive solutions most likely military grade components that survive up to 125C.

There are good reviews of another solution made by Elektronik Sachse, a family business:http://www.elektronik-sachse.de/index_en.htm. Click on the "BMW" Box then "R65-100".

I am kind of discouraged as to the outsourcing of the OMEGA. I work in the electronics business and know what kind of problems you can run into when doing that. I will probably stick to points + Dyna Booster, it worked well for me on my G/S. So no group buy for me.

I just ordered a dual ignition kit direct from The Omega/ Oldtimer/Breindl Group in Germany. It cost 199 Euros total. It took 6 weeks to get it (ordered March 8th and received April 24th), but I saved $60.00 off the Canadian distributor's price.
Here's their price list. The first price is for European customers (includes VAT). The second price (the cheaper one)includes the price for shipping worldwide.
Contact: webmaster@omega-oldtimer.de
or info@omega-bike.de
to order. Be patient, very patient. I don't like phones because I have poor hearing...especially when I'm trying to talk to someone with a thick German accent. E-mail worked pretty well and they take PayPal for payment. They did state that they were a little behind at filling all the orders.
