Yesterday, we had 1"+ of rain in an hour or 2.

My bike, with /5 front drum, was outside and when I went to ride home (in a light rain) I had limited front brake.

Seemed to be water in the drum, only other time it did this was after washing it and that was the cause.

Question, is there supposed to be a drain hole, so this doesn't happen, that may be plugged?

Or could something else be "off" to make this happen?

Or is it just what happens?

I'm thinking it was made worse by being on the sidestand with the front wheel turned to the right which positions the brake plate side angled to catch the most water.

I have owned 3 /5s and they have all suffered from the same blight. If the brake is toatly soaked you have no front brake , if it is a little damp you have the grabiest intsant lock up imganinable . At least the rear is unaffected.

My current winter bike is an R75/5 and I suffer with that problem a lot.

Ride it where you don't need brakes and keep on them to dry out the shoes. You don't need a drain hole, nor would it help. Just one more of the vagaries of the drum.

I think what Mr.Duane is saying is drag the brakes for a short distance to dry them out.

I was dranging them, I was waiting for them to morph from the non-working type to the super grabby type in a mili-second.

Is it the shoes getting wet that makes them ineffective? Or will there be water in there that has to be heated/dispelled?

I have never had them apart when wet, so can only surmise.

They are super grabby when damp, so I assume there must be actual warer in there when they do nothing.
