I had one of those. Bought it new.
That was 1982 from memory. I do remember paying $3900 for it. That was the price for the stock R65.
I went into the dealership and started haggling over a R65. They didn't have one, so tried to sell me the LS. The LS was close to another $1900 more (that number I'm not too sure of) but it was substantial...
I didn't have that money, so eventually after an hour or so of them toing and froing, they offered me the LS for the R65 price. "With panniers sir, and it's mine!"
About 6 weeks later, the LS price was substantially lowered too, so I was happy not to have paid the other price. Couldn't have anyhow. I also found out that it was the first bike the dealership had sold (Wally Black BMW in Dandenong) That dealer went under when they were found to be involved in tax dodging...the "bottom of the harbour" scandal of '82 or '83 in Oz.
Mine was similiar to the one above, but a black seat and matt black mufflers.
The problems I had with mine included...flat tyre riding out of the dealership!
Flat tyre 3 days later!
Tab on CS broke...it really was flimsy. Left side CS bolt snapped whilst using the stand.
The paint on the wheels separated where the rim was "welded" to the spokes.
The rear brake stayed on during one trip, just, but enough to cause drag and poor performance over 10-20 ks. It felt like it wasn't getting petrol. The white wheel turned a strange colour from the heat from the drum. Repaint under warranty.
The mufflers didn't rust out, but they were known to quite quickly.
A fun bike, quick steering with a short wheel base. It'd be great with a 800cc engine in it.

The muffler problem was the only problem you had that I know was a consistent problem with the model.

Had my first high speed weave ever on an R65LS. Mate let me ride his.First time I rode a BMW. Came into a sweeper way too fast. He had warned me not to roll of the throttle in the corner. Just nail it through. So what did I do. Roll off the throttle and she started a huge weave. Bum muscles pulsating, I did not want to bin his bike. Cracked open the throttle and rode out of the weave.

The cracking of the paint was common, especially the first year. They were the Y spoke design used on later K's and the bonding in the early runs saw the paint crack where the bonding happened. Not mine..but right click to view, then enlarge and the cracks can be seen in the approx. 1 cm from the "spokes".

It looks like this example has standard 74 on mufflers painted black.
