This is for the discussion of Motorcycling. The art, the science, the theory of all things related to our favorite sport... riding motorcycles.

Deer! Let's be careful out there...

Post by CVA-42 »

I was riding my 1150RT in the mountains this morning. My Buddy was following about 500 yards behind. Two lane straight road with thick woods on both sides. Speed limit 55. We were barely doing that. Three deer burst out of the woods on my right side. Numbers two and three turned away from the road but number one ran right in front of me. We were on a definite collison vector and, for a split second, I thought this was going to be it. Grabbed a handful of brake and an instant later I knew we wouldn't collide. Missed him/her by less than ten feet, I would say. Closest I've ever come to hitting a deer. Closer than I ever WANT to come...

Been too many close calls for me. In fact I have bumped them, pushed them away, got caught in a herd, ect. The reason I sold my 1964 R60 was an incident with a deer that showed how inadequate the brakes were. I wouldn't be surprised if a deer took my life...well I guess would be surprised at that moment.

Some swear by deer whistles. What do ya'll think?

This lady has a bicycle bell on one of her sidecar rigs. Besides riding all over the lower 48, she has been to Alaska on this rig as well. She says it definitely gets their attention.

I've never seen anything that showed that deer whistles actually accomplish anything, but it's not an easy thing to prove/test. My instinct says it's bogus, but, as the little old Jewish lady says: It couldn't hoit.

There's all kinds of CRAP out there intended to take your money and put your mind at ease ...

The deer population is out of control in the southern part of Michigan.
Plus, it's Fall, which means that soon, the hunters will be beating about in the fields and woods,
the deer will be coming into rut,
and a bad situation becomes much, much worse –
Deer can be expected and will be anywhere and everywhere !

Trust your senses, keep them KEEN, moderate your riding, and
(esp. if you live in Mi or similar), just avoid riding during sunset hours !

After Larry Grodsky was killed I remember reading that he had told his wife or his girlfriend that he felt he could handle most any situation on the road except a deer. He said he believed that if he were killed on the road, it would be because of a deer. In this case, it was the brakes on the RT that saved me. If I had been on something like my /2, it probably would have been a different story. It was that close.

These are claimed to be effective on bison, deer and kangaroos.
