balancing carbs

Hello all. I remember reading somewhere that there is a method for balancing the carbs without gauges or pulling a plug. I did a search here but didn't get anywhere, (could be me having a bad sense of what to search for). Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Duane Ausherman has a good article on balancing carbs by ear. Here is the link. Drop down the page a bit and start reading.

Or ...
save yourself a learning curve and perhaps some grief & aggravation –
buy a mercury stick ...

Sorry, guys. I know y'all are very fond of boasting of the ability to play it by ear,
and I will be one that can play that game, too.
A sure hit at rallies, eh ?
However, quick and easy rules my day,
and mercury will be the chosen way

(on the antique carburetted machines, anyhow)

Yep a hit at two of Ken's rallies. However, it was quite a bit different in that I taught a virgin to tune carbs by ear. One was Veg and he did just fine.

I had no choice in that I was tuning them long before they had a vacuum take off.

It is better because one learns it as a diagnostic procedure. Seldom is a carb/engine perfect, so the way it responds to adjustments also tells the condition of various parts, such as clogged jets and low compression.

I don't think that a mercury stick is any faster than by ear.

New kid on the block..

I found it interesting that advrider allows unabashed advertising on it's forum.

Other than spam posts, which are different, I guess the issue hasn't come up on Boxerworks. Other than the descriptions of each of the forums there's not any formal guidance to the moderators here. And I'm not suggesting that we need it. I guess trusting the moderators to exercise their judgment is part of the informality I like here. But it's also a relatively easy job since I don't recall any potentially controversial decision points coming up (other than the occasional post of a very naked lady).

Decision points might have required some heavy duty deliberation were I a moderator back in the FH days.

They have a spot just for vendors. They're strict about keeping offers etc in the vendor section and quickly move them on if posted in the wrong spot.

Ahem,... a lady is either naked or not, there are no almost nor very naked ladies.

To prove my point, I dare you (and ZM) to post any examples right here.

FWIW -
a few days ago I was going to check/adjust my carbs before going on a day trip.
Got out my homemade, notabadjob manometer, paused a moment, then put it back.
I did it by ear and feel and it runs just fine.
I always found the manometer too sensitive and jumpy without any dampers in it. I know I could look for some, buy them, fit them in, and adjust the whole thing.
But I already have ears and fingers. :geek:
