horn relay

I am wanting to put duel fiam horns on my '77 R100. It has a single horn now. Do I understand correctly that I need to use a relay if I'm going to do this? Why does it need a relay? Can I make a relay from existing parts or do I need to break down and buy one, (or is it just easier to buy one)?

Two horns draw too much current for the horn button. You can but a 30 amp 12 volt relay from Radio Shack for less than $10.

That is where I bought mine.

I bought my horn relay from Rider Wearhouse (Aerostich guys). They came with a diagram. I'm hopeless with electrical stuff so I really needed it. I attached my relay right in front of the starter relay which on my bike, is on the left very near the front under the tank.

Damn! and only $4.00!!!

http://www.aerostich.com/prevent-or-rep ... relay.html

"12V, 40A Bosch-type relay for use with high amp draw electronic accessories like big driving lights, extra loud horns, double sided arm jesters, etc. Waterproof sealed plastic housing with metal mounting tab. Includes installation and wiring instructions. 2.125” x 1 x 1.25"

And don't test your horns inside your garage without hearing protection.

You might consider one for your headlight while you are at it. It is said to increase handlebar switch life AND headlight brightness!

My way of dealing with horns and their relays for the last 50+ years is throw the goddamn things in the bin.
The idiots in their insulated cages on the phone, music cranked to the max, or other distractions are not going to
notice.
