I had a few days off in a row and made some progress on my 1974 R??/6 "cafe racer": eBay "rebuilt" engine mounted, near new clutch from old engine swapped, seat, coils, transmission, starter, airbox all in, and I was fiddling with the fairing mounts, gauges, cable routing, etc and and started wondering how hard it would be to get this this running without the gauge cluster (I'm thinking of running an electronic tach only). I know the charging system would need a light bulb or resistor to work, but what about the rest of it? I also found that by mounting my Magura clip ons upside down I gained acres more room for my hands, levers, cables, etc. They ended up with about as much drop as a regular set of Euro bars. Still, it's very crowded up there.

My bike is just pieces put together and I run the /6 headlight without the instruments. I can't remember from 1981, but it was easy to make my own harness from a scrap original one. I also have no horn, or turn signals. It only has a few wires. I only kept the change light and the high beam light. If one doens't know when they are in neutral, then they probably shouldn't be riding.

Yep, 90% of what you see was bought off ebay or the IBMWR, only the frame, transmission, headlight bucket and a few other small bits are original to this bike. My transmission neutral and clutch lever switches are long gone too. I have to keep the horn and turn signals to make it legal, but for the rest of it, do I just connect the + and - leads to the idiot lights together, or forget them?

Tim, here's a diagram I made for the 74 /6 pod. It shows the colours of the electrical hoses that connect to the various things that light up in there.



I reckon you'll just need to put a 2 or 3 Watt lamp from the blue hose to the green/black hose so your alternator feels happy. Everything else is optional so don't connect any of them unless you want to put a lamp in for oil pressure or indicator idiot light or whatever. Don't go joining wires - just leave them unconnected.

I fitted an Acewell electronic instrument to Brunhilde a year ago when I put a Slash Five type bucket (a chinese copy of a russian copy). Brun is now a Slash Five Point Seven or thereabouts.



I mounted the speedo sender thingy down on the front fork leg thus -

Since I grafted a POD wire set to my /5 it was easy to take it out

I use a Electonic Tachometer

I installed LED's for the idot lights, they work great!! except when the sun is over head.... I just installed a shade that I need to check to see if it impoves viewing

Thanks for that wiring diagram Charlie, as I suspected, not much in there to prevent running without. That Acewell speedo looks real nice, relatively cheap too. I notice they have other models that are smaller and rectangular. that's what I'm looking for to mount to the bottom edge of my dash. I've saved your wiring diagram for future reference.
