Pure fluff IMNSHO –
Gear box fluid level will change if marginally throughout the course of regular maintenance,
and most problematic at interval changes will be the nature and consistency of metallic solids ...
if there is a problem such that fluid is lost,
1) you will see dramatic "seeping", a puddle, or
2) you will be on the road and not able to look at a "sight glass" in ny event ...
which begs the question ... what's the advantage ?

Might be handy if the fluid level is prone to increase? Of course, addressing the problem would be a good thing too.

My previous two Yamahas had sight glass in the engine block. At first, I disliked it. It took little time to see that it was far easier to check oil level than a dip stick. All the more so with my R80RT.

Manfred, the sight glass is for the transmission. Vanzen's point, if I understand it correctly, is that it is somewhat of a gimmick, but at least, likely harmless. To check the transmission oil is easy. Take out the fill plug and the oil should be at that level. Also, it usually doesn't need to be checked between services as the engine oil does.

AH! I didn't know the sight glass was for the tranny. The web page does clearly state "gearbox". I am still learning that my mind has much Yamaha in it still, wherein there is no separate transmission oil.

A sight-glass for the crankcase would be a different matter entirely.
A sight-glass is as easy as it gets – if one bothers to look.
However, a dipstick is as accurate, promotes the good habit of checking oil level regularly,
and works just fine.
If the Type-247 had a crankcase oil sight-glass as OE, I would not complain.
Conversely, I would certainly not bother to retrofit one !
