I know this is the Airhead corner but there are single minded people out there.

Too much money, if those dollars are about the same size as ours. I like those bikes. A guy at work let me ride his, one of the single cylinder ones. My R65's motor is smoother but that F650 has suspension.

I've seen R80GSs go advertised for much less.

It has probably only done that mileage be cause no one has been able to start the **cker for seven years.

I had one of the goddam pieces of *hit, and it was the biggest piece of junk I have owned in over 50 years of biking.

There was a TV series a few years back where a couple of English, err, TV personalities, entered the Paris Dakar on factory prepared and supported F650s, and one of them had to pull out mid race when even half a dozen factory mechanics and three trailer loads of tools and spares couldnt get the , err, bike to start.

I finally tracked the problem down to faulty load control relay, the device which is supposed to supply a clean 12 volts to the control module while the starter was cranking, but only did so intermittently.

I had a 1997 F650 and it was great.
But it was the carburreted dual plugged version with the Rotax engine.
When the bike was re-worked with fuel injection, single plug, etc., the Internet was full of horror stories.

I thought that after 03 or 04 they went back to dual plugs and had sorted a lot of the electrical gremlins. The G650s (made in the east) are developing a nasty rep for not starting.

They did go back to dual plugs, but at that point I didn't really follow what was going on. I don't believe the Rotax engine is used now.

That is my understanding as well. It's not going to BMW manufacturing that screwed things up, it was the poorly executed fuel injection.

I had an oil pressure switch go bad on my F650ST while still under warranty. The dealer had it for a week and a half (out of my summer)!

I could do that fix in 10 minutes with a crescent wrench. Needless to say they never saw me or the bike again.

All very interesting ,I've ridden and enjoyed a '97 carb model and had thought the fuel injected model was an improvement, especially re fuel consumption.

Apparently I need to look more deeply .

They had serious surging problems. But, you're right about the mileage - it went from very good on the carb models to amazing on the injected models.
