On oil filter change

1984 R100: I just dumped me sump and pulled out the filter. I remember a post stating that there is a ball and spring inside the cavity that should be checked. Is there a quick method? BTW will you guys re-use the big white O ring and shim if they look good?

Thanx in advance...and I'll be putting in Mobil V-twin 20w50 oil. Will this affect my warranty? Will the V-twin specific additives cause the more rearward cylinder to cool too much?

The BWORing can be re-used but only by Ron Jeremy, and not for his oil filter.

This oil will cause your cylinders to pivot into MotoGuzzi position.

Will the V-twin specific additives cause the more rearward cylinder to cool too much?

No, but it will make your timing uneven and make your exhaust note sound like a tuber.

And the quick method to check the ball and spring is to poke a wooden cooking skewer in the hole. A gentle push should indicate that the spring is behind the ball and that the ball seats back into place nicely. Pat self on back.

If it does not, poke ones self in the eye with the same wooden cooking skewer, it will feel better.

When I had airheads I often re-used the "BWORing". On the oil filter. The Ron Jeremy angle never occurred to me.

Should this thread be moved to the Speakeasy? It might need a picture of a scantily clad hotty or two, as well.

Youse guys are funny.

I don't have wooden skewers for probing my ball, but I do have a chainsaw file.

Ideally, the probing object needs a flat on the end..................much like a chainsaw file really..

The 'flat' prevents the end of the 'probe' from easily slipping off the ball....

I have tried using a skewer before, but the chicken obscured the ball.
