I am respraying my petrol tank on my 1979 r65 here in manchester england during the
winter lay up .
There is a small bracket ,welded at manufacture ,on the underside rear of the tank that
appears to have a tapped hole in the tang .
It has never been used for anything !
Any ideas wot its for ?
Thanks JIM

Jim
My 79 tank has the same small bracket with a threaded hole.
My guess is that you were thinking of using it to hang the tank while painting and I actually think that's what it might be for.

Dudes, I doubt the thread tang (add an "h" and it says "thang") is for hanging it while painting. It has a dealie with two holes where the rubber mounts go; which can be used to hang it. Just bend a hook in a wire ("wahr", if you're from the Deep South [USA}) and hang it by one of the mounting holes.

Iirc the R65 had a bracket/latch, not the two holes in the welded bracket and two plastic nuts to fasten via the rubber mounts. It's been a while since I've seen under a R65 tank though.

R65 tanks are secured by a bail clip over the frame tube at the back.
The small bracket that Jim refers to has nothing to do with mounting the tank. It must be something else. A clue is that on an original tank this little bracket has a area of unpainted metal as if it might even have been used for hanging the tank for painting at the factory.

You are on the wrong forum.
These guys (unless they've owned one) don't know sheet about Type 248's...

It's all been discussed before!

I have today asked the question on a German BMW forum. This could produce a definitive answer, or alternatively might prove with certainty that people in at least three different countries have absolutely no idea what the bracket does.

It looks like they didn't come to any definitive conclusion either!

Yes. Apparently we don't know "sheet" about 248's, but the bmwr65 site doesn't know sheet about ONLY 248's.
