Well.. the "mint" $4000 BMW for sale on craigslist turned out to be a rusty, crusty basket case. Fried wheel bearings, black tape on seat, filthy where it couldn't be easily wiped, hard to start, tank recoated over rusty original liner and peeling paint, rusty headers, (note how clean it is where the worst of the gunk has been sprayed off the engine, etc) Oddly, it had a four speed transmission with no kick starter. That wasn't factory, was it?:

Odd sense of reality.

I'm shopping for a Westfalia right now and have seen some real messes described as mint that belong beside that poor /6.

Did you taste it? I think those are flakes of mint or maybe "retcyn" (the stuff in Certs) all over the aluminum. :D

I mulled the idea of making an offer, but hard as I tried, it wouldn't sweeten the deal... (it's dictionary time)

The description is consistent with what I learned back in the day. If an ad said "rebuilt motor" that meant that it needed to have the motor rebuilt. To read "all tuned and serviced" meant that it needed it.

I went to TN a couple of years ago with a friend to look at a "mint" black toaster that he was hot to buy. Asking price was $4500. It was a nice "twenty footer" as the pictures suggested but when we got there, it turned out to be a BIG disappointment - - easily worse than yours, Tim, including flat tires and no battery. After a bit, my buddy was trying to talk himself into it and seemed to actually be doing it. I took him aside and said "You asked me to come on this trip for a reason. Walk away." He did. I was pissed at the seller but it was a beautiful and cloudless spring day.

How could anybody call that "mint condition" and keep a straight face? What a hunk o crap. Sad indeed to see a fine machine treated like that.

If that bike was 100 years old, that still wouldn't be "mint" condition.
