This is for the discussion of Motorcycling. The art, the science, the theory of all things related to our favorite sport... riding motorcycles.

Winter?!

Post by lrz »

'lo all!

I've been buried in work, large renovation project these past few months but not so much that I haven't noticed an almost total lack of snow/ice here in the Northeastern US & temperatures more akin to late Fall. I am aware this is not the case for some of you.
I'm giving thought to installing a battery and back in the saddle!!

Might be different next year. It's a short life. Ride when you can.

Just rainy here, like normal. Nothing wrong with a water-cooled airhead!

We have had only a few centimetres of snow a few times, but so little that people are talking about it. Have not used the snowblower yet.
Right now there is nothing on the ground, and there hasn't been for some time.
Also, temperatures have been warmer than usual. I rode my bike for a couple of hours a week ago.
I've spent most of my money on women, motorcycles, and beer.
The rest of it I just wasted.

Temps have been abnormally warm all winter here in the exurbs of Atlanta. The daffodils appeared at least 2-3 weeks ahead of when they normally do. I'm seeing ornamental plum trees in almost full bloom right now and my wife's flower garden has stuff coming up. The Gulf Stream has stayed north this year, keeping things south of it comparatively warm. A natural occurence, I guess. But, still, I find the whole situation vaguely disturbing as I always have global warming in the back of my mind. On Wednesday, I rode the R100 north to the mountains almost to NC and my buddy and I stopped for lunch. There are several great bike routes to get there but all of them involve crossing the eastern Continental Divide over the Blue Ridge at some fairly high elevations. In most other years, these routes can be pretty dicey on a bike because of all the gravel and salt, so we usually just stay away from them until spring. This year - - clean as my driveway.

You can thank me for the lack of snow. Last year we had 30" here in SE Indiana, so in late Feb with predictions of another storm on the way and getting tired of shoveling our 100' driveway by hand (which I have done for the last 30 years) I decided to buy a blade for the old 9N Ford tractor. I got it home and hooked up. Well, the storm never came and so far this year only about 2" total, so the 9N just sits in the barn waiting.

So. Maine has been unseasonally warm and little snow. It is now now down to 4 and there is about 8-10" of crusty stuff on the ground. The Sebago Derby, usually next weekend has already been cancelled, I thought it would still be ok and as it turns out probably correctly, every one else wanted it cancelled allowing more concentration on the State Wide Derby. All the other events still remaining will go, Kids Derby with stocked brook trout, Polar Dip will still raise 45,000 - $60,000 and the Speed Run last year 156 mph in 1000' should all be a go.
The sooner you get behind, the more time you'll have to catch up.
