Intro + Help with my custom wiring diagram

Hey all, I didn't see a place to do intros, so I'll do it here. I'm 37 and live in the Philadelphia, Pa area. I recently bought a 1966 r50/2 roller and a 1974 r90/6 engine to go in it. This is my first BMW and it's a dream I've been trying to fulfill for years. I've ridden all of my life and built several bikes from scratch but they've all been Japanese.

When I build a bike, I typically wire it from scratch too. I don't really know why, but I enjoy doing it. I think this will be the 6th bike I've wired. Typically, I build stripped down bikes with the bare essentials, but I want the Beemer to be a little more complex than that. I'm by no means an electrical expert or wiring guru, but I can think, more or less read a wiring diagram, and I can read advice on the internet.

The Beemer doesn't look too different electrically from what I'm used to, but I wanted to post my diagram here and see if anyone saw a major problem with it that I didn't see.

I am using combined reg/rec unit and an aftermarket ignition switch (in a /5 bucket). I've also fused several places that aren't fused stock (ignition, headlight, alternator trigger wire, and a main fuse). I'm also using the /2 hi/lo horn switch, and I don't want to stress that poor thing out, so I put in headlight and horn relays.

Finally, the reg/rec has an orange wire that goes to the ignition switch to prime the alternator. In the stock situation, that wire goes through the the charging indicator light. None of the reg/rec combos seem to show that wire using the indicator light. It seems like it shouldn't be a problem to wire in that light, but I figured someone here has probably already tried it (maybe there is a resistance issue?)

Thanks for looking!

By using the /5 bucket you have made the job much easier. I probably wouldn't fuse the ignition, but the rest are OK.

Thanks Duane, why wouldn't you fuse the ignition? I thought it was odd that BMW didn't do it, but I wondered if I might be missing something.

EDIT: Originally I thought I wanted to use the /2 headlight bucket but I quickly found out why most folks use /5 bucket on a conversion. I'm glad I did it too.

Hi, I don't know much about electrical stuff but you don't seem to be getting much response so I'll address the charge light issue. Hopefully, someone who understands it better will come by and leave a little more well informed wisdom.

I have one bike with that regulator/rectifier unit that replaces the stock regulator and the diode board. It works great so far. In the stock system, if the charge light is burned out, the bike won't charge. With the combined unit, if it is similar to what I have, you do not need the charge light for the system to charge.

It sounded as if you may have already known that or at least most of it but if you didn't, I hope it helps.

Thanks Chuey, I figure this is the type of topic that's not going to attract a lot of response, so I won't take it personally :)

All three of the reg/rec instructions I saw had the orange wire going straight to the ignition switch, and not using the indicator. I"m wondering if I can still use the indicator or if the added resistance of the bulb will throw the reg/rec off somehow.

What brand reg/rec did you use?

Electro Sport. They used to be in the same town as my shop is in. They moved about 45 minutes away. I went to see them about my turn signal problems on my Cafe' Racer.....(their turn signals as well). They didn't fix my problem. It was a member who doesn't frequent the board any longer who came to the rescue and we got it ironed out. On the regulator unit, they were able to clear up a misunderstanding that arose due to confusing directions that were included with the unit.

I think there are some aftermarket products that will tell you the condition of your charging system on an ongoing basis. Further, I think they're really small and light. You may find it in Rider Warehouse, I'm not sure.
