Can anyone share a close-up pic of what the original R100S engine badges looks like.
I can't tell from mine what parts are s'posed to be paint and what should be polished, it looks pretty original but chips at the edges show paint is over polished alloy and that doesn't seem right.

thanks
Mal

Here's a pic which is enlargeable from a 30 second Google search....

I've repainted a few engine badges with using a satin black paint on the entire badge. After it's dry to the touch, I use a soft wire motor brush to lightly 'buff' off the raised letters. A small dremel tool should do the trick too.
This simple technique works well.

I think the engine badge is the best looking part of that bike.

Interesting - I'm pretty sure my R100S (last of the heavy flywheel) had the plain BMW badge on the engine...

edit - just found a pic:

I found that satin black followed by wet'n'dry (used wet) on a sanding block brought the highlighted areas up a treat.

How's this Mal? I can forward you a 5mB piccie if'n you want? I know, it's from a RS but the style is the same. Taken from my 11/1981 R100RS! Click on the pic, then again for full screen, then again for warts 'n all.

Interesting badge Steve, my starter cover only has BMW on it.
Am I missing something? I wonder if my cover is not original?

Mine's the same as yours Jeff... i thought all the post-81 bikes were thus. my '81 GS is also like badged.

Following recent researches i note that some late "clam shell" engines also had the the 'plain' engine badges and even the ribbed, black timing chest.
