R80RT Vin Number

Hello,
I have a 1986 R80RT WB1036406F6490092 I'm just getting ready to get the tags for it so today I called Geico gave the vin# ,and was told "OH it's a R65"
So I repeated the Vin# and was told that it came up as a R65. I know the first owner and the second owner
who I brought the bike from As well as the BMW dealer. Hebert BMW Baton Rouge,LA. I was told that there was some kind of RE-CALL by BMW, by Heids BMW Johnsberg,NY
does any one know anything more about it.

Only recall I'm aware of is for the 19-inch front snowflake wheels produced on/before 9/82.

Bob,
Couple things.
I had the same thing happen w/ GEICO just in obtaining a quote (which was ridiculously high ,btw) in regard to a g/s. Were you talking to a motorcycle specific representative?
I had a similar issue w/ a '77; progressive insisted the VIN # was longer than it actually is though they were much more reasonable and added zeros to satisfy their input form.
BTW, Heid's is still open for business albeit not as a BMW dealer.

I know that Heid's is no longer a BMW Dealer, Much to BMW's loss. I found out about Heid's from a
buddy that lives in Bronxville, NY after we talked about my UN-happiness with Max BMW. After 3 weeks
all Max had done was take off a valve cover from my R100RS put it back on and billed me for 45min labor.
Paul Heid is very good. Well worth the trip.... appx. 2 hours for me

I understand. Based on several bad experiences I would counsel anyone, especially an airhead rider, to avoid Maxbmw in Troy, NY at all costs. Seriously.
My mention of Heid being open for business was that you might investigate any paper trail. More probably, the issue lies in the Geico database.

Always keep in mind that BMW stamped in a few bikes with errors. A digit could be missing, or overstamped, or an extra digit stamped in. They also made at least one bike with an imaginary number not within the range claimed.
Any such error would imply that BMW isn't perfect, so discount the above information.

When I went to register my '73 R75/5 the first time, the local DMV didn't have older BMW motorcycles in their database. I had to, at their request, bring in a Haynes manual so they could see a picture and photocopy the weight/displacement/vin etc information. It also didn't help that the PO had brought it to Hawaii in a container, without the required paperwork for importing an out of state vehicle, and then didn't register or get Hawaii plates in the time alloted... sheesh
