Very Ratty R100RS with Krauser 4V heads

Post by sterob »

I have been thinking about my mates BM with the 4 valve heads and what it would be worth......
I missed taking a pic of it, but I can describe its condition.
Its a 82 R100RS, smashed screen. fairing is U/S, dents, scratches, rear lights half hanging off, licenced, although if he got pulled over it would be red stickered, I reckon.Seat has holes in it, wiring hanging everywhere...it runs and stops. He wrings its neck everywhere he rides it, although his knees and ankles are shot so he can't ride it until he builds a sidecar for it now( project #27).....
Oh, and it has Krauser 4 Valve heads on it of unknown condition.( he bought the bike about 15 years ago, fairly cheap with them on it. ) but I assume they are 'ok'. The bikes price THEN did not reflect the value of the heads.
It also has a bad vibration which he doesn't know what is causing it.

If one were to make an offer, what would be your best guess? ( Australian value.)
A another R100 would be nice, but I do not thick this bike is a good candidate for a restoration ( to R100S configuration )
I would like the heads first and the other bits second.....
I don't know what KV4 heads are worth in Oz even if there *were* any for sale....

Something to ponder lads.....lol

What value?

Just the value of the heads.......whatever that is.

There's little value in a totally worn out bike.

Oh yeah, don't forget mates rates!

Krauser 4v heads ask for a shed full of cash on US ebay whenever they appear. Usually over $2000 from memory. How that equates to Oz as a spare part cost I have no idea.
There's the rarity factor, but they don't seem to be the most reliable thing to get, remembering the quinner had some experience with them that wasn't straightforward or without quirks.

I'm his mate, but I don't whether he knows it works 'that' way as well...lol

Yeah....$2000 for the whole bike....maybe. I would not be too comfortable going any higher, if I was tempted, as I doubt he would have looked after them, as such and he certainly would not have ever set the clearances. (I assume you have to...lol?)

No offense to your friend,
but given the condition of the bike
and his apparent lack of mechanical understanding,
why will we assume that the K4V heads are in good condition ?

From what I have learned, K4V heads require fastidious set-up,
regular personal involvement with maintenance,
are a bit finicky,
parts availability is limited, some NLA,
and depend upon an engine oiling system that is in top-notch condition for longevity.
K4V shafts, bushings, guides, valves, seats ...
will be subject to all the same vagaries of wear as any other.

So ... if you will be buying the MC for the heads –
A closer & thorough inspection may be advisable.

whats the price of a rebuildable core is the question when the time comes if your stuff is beyond repair

then the quesstion of the buyer is, are parts avaliable, OR does the rebuildler take care of it.....

If fuel supports upping the compression is better then add 40mm Intake and exhaust heads

other wise just be happy with what you got

In U.S. dollars, I'd put it at a WAG of $1200 - $1500 plus the heads. So, $2000 max sounds pretty good to me too, as the heads are of unknown condition and may well be pretty tired. In brand new condtion, the heads would be worth more that that whole bike.

Good points guys.
Vanzen- No chance of offending him. I've been trying for years...
The heads would really be an unknown quantity and would need to be at least pulled off in order to determine some sort of value....A bit head, without bringing the bike home. It is located 300 km from me.

I *might* broach the subject with him and see what his thoughts are. he might suprise me and be reasonable about it...who knows...lol

I seem to remember that a fairly rough looking set of Krausers (with new pistons) was for sale a month or so back, might well have been either UK or US ebay, but I seemed to think that the price was fairly steep.
