Motor wont rev past 3000rpm
Motor wont rev past 3000rpm
I got my bike started for the first time since I acquired the bike. Now the bike starts up every time with no problems but my issue is that every time i rev the bike up, it wont go past 3000rpm's. I dont know too much about carbs so any input would be great.

Do you have a strobe timing light? See if you are getting full advance; the "F" should be centered in the timing hole at around 3000 rpm.

We don't know much about your bike, such as year, model and mileage. Any history might help too.lelocp wrote:I got my bike started for the first time since I acquired the bike. It's a 1971 bmw r75/5 with 26000 miles. i took the bike out for a spin and it did in fact go over 3000 rpm but every time I accelerate the motor seems to hesitate.

Float levels would be first, then fuel flow.
Snowbums site has info on setting/checking both.

If the bike has been sitting for any length of time, the jets are probably gunked-up, especially the main jet tube. Of course, ther might be a problem in the distributor that prevents the weights from advancing the spark.
It looks like you're going to have to learn about carbs, or find someone who does know.
How long has it been sitting around?
Are you in the AIRHEADS?

I went and got my carbs cleaned and now the motor runs fine until today. After a ten to fifteen minute ride, the right cylinder begins to miss (losing power) and then eventually wont fire at all. I checked the spark plug and it's wet and black, so I know im running rich. Could that be the culprit. I noticed if i wait the right cylinder eventually fires up.
