I've had the Omega on the bike for a couple thousand miles and I love it-Fast starts and seemingly better acceleration. However, after some recent posts I've read, I think it is time for me to install a switch for a backup to points. I am curious to know, from those who have installed a backup switch, what kind if switch was used and where it was mounted.
Thanks!
Paul

G'day Paul
The switch doesn't need to be anything special - it is switching 12V at quite low amps. A toggle switch from your local auto parts supplier will do. I used a three position switch, thinking that I'd like to have an OFF function, but I've never used it. I mounted the switch on an angle bracket fixed to the coil mount under the tank. To reach it I have to remove the seat and stick a finger through the gap above the tank mounting bracket. My Omega worked perfectly for 12 months, then started failing intermittently. I have the bike apart at the moment and intend to mount the Omega box up on the frame spine to see if overheating is causing the problem.

Re: '78 R80/7 Omega ignition
i would keep it very simple, just a proper male and female spade connectors connector in a suitable housing to make the connection. A simple toggle switch would be subject to vibration/damp etc and might lead to extra complications.
The instructions for my Sachse mentioned that intermittent losing of the trigger signal on an electronic ignition is more noticeable than on points.
I would also agree that mounting the omega black (silver) box of tricks somewhere outside of the engine might well lead to a longer life. The black Boxes of my S H and Sachse ignitions are much more substantial than the Omega.
I dont know if the Omega instructions mention this but most digital electronic ignitions require resistor plug caps, easy to find from NGK.
IMHO etc etc.
