So Ernst is running a little fat, like 30-32 mpg fat. I think it's all happening at part throttle, as I get a fat burbly sound going downhill at 60 but it clears out going uphill at 60. I would expect it's worn needle and related jet.
Would there be anything wrong with lowering the needle one notch so the taper closes some of that gap to test things out?
I'm expecting to be replacing needles, needle jets, and floats this winter as money comes in. I'll also finish the BLINGing of the Bings.
Needle Tweak?
Needle Tweak?
Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world.

Re: Needle Tweak?
Nothing wrong with that...note that moving the needle is a gross change, something like 5 jet sizes? It's a big jump.

You adjusted your carbs using the shorting the plug method, correct? Try tuning them by ear, one at a time, while idling, until they run the best. You're probably just a bit rich.
Re: Needle Tweak?
You are at least 10 mpg off the mark, Mel.
Try what Tim suggested first, but if that doesn't help, look carefully at your "choke" cables and be sure when you have the lever in the OFF position, the enrichers are REALLY off.
I got caught on this a short time ago!!
