Hello all,

I like black bikes for various reasons ... Avus black with white pinstripes is just gorgeous, no argument there. Well, a lot can be said about night visibility of pitch-black bikes. On my G/S I used reflective pinstripes on the rims and (cheap) reflective adhesive. Did the trick but came off in bad whether on the rims.

Now, for my latest project, a R100-to-R100RS conversion, I want to go pitch black matte (bot fully rat but close), with black vinyl computergraphics made of Scotchlite 680″ by 3M (which lights up white under any kind of light!) ot something similar whatever the police uses). That material adds a significant level of safety to night time, dusk and dawn riding.

Now, as for the design, I am looking at something like the K1 graphics. Something that accentuates the RS fairing lines and adds a lot of reflective area at night It shall also be clear coated for protection. Remember though, it can hardly be seen during the day on black background. I don't know whether clear coating has an impact on its reflective properties. There must be experts on this board who know the answer that question but surely 3M would know.

Has anybody done anything like that, designwise? I know we have a lot of designers amongst us that did various vinyl repro badges. Maybe we make it so attractive that is sells.

There aren't many examples out there:

I am hoping for a couple of ideas ... even if they go in a different direction.

I don't have anything to offer you on your questions, but the project sure sounds interesting. We will, of course, need pics when it happens.

Sounds like a real fun project. I always wanted to do something similar on my 1150RT. Just curious, why would you want to clear coat over top of vinyl?

Clear coat on top of vinyl ... seems to be the right thing to to when it comes to protecting the vinyl from weather. But it's a valid question.

I could be totally wrong on this ,but I believe most applications of vinyls should not be top coated. Solvent based urethanes can soften the vinyl and degrade the adhesive holding them on. I know the the industry is working towards all water borne products, and that may be the case in your area, which I do not believe would have the same effect, but I would be sure to check with the graphics manufacturer to make sure what type of top coat can be applied
