Installing Farley side stand on 1995 R100RT

Hi all
Just received my Farley after market side stand and have a couple of questions before I install it. As part of the installation I have to replace the rear bar motor mount with the supplied longer version. It seems straight forward but are there any tricks I need to know when doing this replacement? Can I keep the bike on the center stand while doing this? Should I support the motor with a Jack while removing and replacing the new bar mount? Will the old bar mount slide out easily and the new one slide in easily? I'm just worried that when I remove the old mount the motor will drop and bind the rod or malalign with the frame holes. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum!
I'm not sure I know what a Farley side stand is, but from your post I reckon that it is essentially like the aftermarket Brown side stand that I'm more familiar with. With the Brown a longer motor through bolt is needed. I'm guessing the Farley to be the same. In my case, when re-fitting the Brown side stand to my '91 RT, I didn't attempt to prop up the motor and I didn't need to. My somewhat limited experience had shown me that the fit of the motor is tight and no precaution was necessary. And if I was wrong (as has happened once or twice) I would deal with it.
Luckily I was right again.
But I do have another bit of advice, perhaps pertinent for you. When the Brown side stand was originally fitted, by a previous owner, a length of 1/2" threaded rod was used. The threaded rod bent after time and eventually the RT was leaning over way too far. What I did was to pull the rear motor mounting throuugh bolt from a /6 parts bike and use it. The extra length (compared to the original mount on the RT) was just about right. And no more leaning since the 12mm through bolt is stiffer than the 1/2" threaded rod.

Thanks Ken
I lived in Okla for 9 years in Perkins just outside of Stillwater. Went to Okla. State for under graduate and veterinary school. Loved the people but the summers ate me alive and the tornadoes scared the sh*t out of me. So I moved back east. I'm not new to the board but mostly lurk. I also have a cherry R75/5 lwb that I bought used at Coopers Honda in Stillwater in !975. Rode the bike all these years then did a frame up restoration in 2005. Got the 1995 R100RT last Nov. and hope to take a 3mo. trip this summer cross country from upstate NY and back. I was going to take the /5 but I like the heated grips and fairing on the RT. I guess I'm getting old. The Farley is a beefed up version of the Browns side stand. It comes with the beefy longer rear motor mount pin and also is designed with the secondary mounting clamp to attach to the frame and not the exhaust header. Made by a guy In Michigan and has gotten great reviews on line. Well thanks for the advise.

Engine won't drop its rear-the torque on the front rod is enough to keep the engine aligned temporarily.
After installing my Farley on the R100 it made me question why I put up with the OEM stand all these years.

Ken, Snowbum goes over a lot of stands in his "Farley, Brown, Surefoot, Flying Tpot: Sidestands. Reynolds RideOff Center-stand" article. He doesn't really go into much on the differences between the Brown and the Farley though.

Interesting side stand article Major.
I'm one of the few people who gets along well with the stock /6 and /7 side stands. In fact, I actually like them. That's because my longer leg can deploy them from the saddle. I feel sorry for those with shorter legs though. I went riding once with my brother in law, me on my R75/6 and he on my '77 R100S. Watching him dismount from the S was "interesting". At one point he laid the bike down on it's footpeg. No harm done.
I've often wondered what the hell was going on in BMW's collective mind when they designed that early side stand.
On the other side of the coin I didn't get along well at all with the stock side stand of my '91 RT Monolever. I couldn't find it while seated on the bike. I finally made a pad with a tang which screwed to the bottom of the side stand. That worked. Later I put the Brown side stand back on (this time with a longer stronger through bolt) so a short legged good friend could ride the bike.
As a trivial aside from a trivial subject, I have personally encountered three airheads from the Boise area equipped with the Reynolds center stands. Two of the bikes i own and the other is owned by that same brother in law. In all three cases the center stand was too short, allowing the bike to slightly rock. A check of the P/N on one of the centerstands revealed that it was intended for an R65. Evidently the then BMW dealer didn't have a clue. I've often wondered how many airheads from Boise got those short center stands and how many owners are still putting up with them. Since I'm mechanically inclined I was able to weld some extensions to the bottom of the stands. But even then I'm not a fan of the Reynolds ride-off stand. The stock center stand isn't hard to deploy and with my long legs I can use the momentum of my butt to nudge the bike off the center stand.
Those people who say that the airheads were designed for tall riders are right IMNSHO.

I've just scored a Brown side stand for my 1982 R100RS.
I'm having a little trouble sorting this. No matter how I attach it, the stand hits the muffler when it's up.
I've tried to bring the thing further out by packing it at the engine stud.
It still hits the muffler when retracted.
Snowbums pictures suggest the header bracket that the stand attaches to at it's front point should have the two ends either side of the mounting point. That doesn't work either.

Any further clues?

This picture seems to show the assymetrical right side header bracket in use? I'm thinking that the front part of the stand might be held closer to the block and the rear angles out a little. I'm hoping that will stop the stand from hitting the muffler. In the current setup, it hits the muffler when up and stays rested on it. I'd rather it it was a cm or so away.
