Gidday Fellas,

Well, it was cheap!! so I brought it.... I'm back WTF!

Image

Never had or ridden a "K" model bike before, certainly always admired and looked at them when passing one in the street and over the last few months the price of them compared to the older "R" bikes has caught my eye, yes I would love an old "R" again if I had the $$$ and you could say I am kicking myself just a wee bit that I sold my 81 R100rs a few years back but I done what I done at the time and I was in a different frame of mind with the restoration of my old 1928 Chevrolet which is now completed, registered and running so very sweetly out and around the country roads of Gippsland Victoria..

In regards to "K" model bikes, I have always liked the look of the RS and I had me eye on a few of them lately, made a few calls, asked some questions but it never really happened and didnt feel right at the time, bad vibes and all I suppose, and then on Tuesday this week I spotted this listed on the web, through an small bike shop in Melbourne.
They had it listed under the K100RS section but it is not, so I rang as it got the better of me, the young salesman thought is was a K100RS and I knew it was a K100RT, but after talking to SteveD on the phone and giving him the VIN No. to look up it turned out to be a K1100LT... Bonus!!
Now for the fun bit, because of a speedo electrical issue the advertised price of $3900.00 was dropped to $2500.00 when I asked the question... so I brought it.

10th month 1993 K1100LT - 152,000km - 2 Elderly prior owner - It had a roadworthy done middle of last year but failed on the speedo so the owner gave up and left it, the motor is so very quiet and super responsive.

Anyway that is my story, I will give it a good clean and going over, I will take my time and get this bike looking like new again...

Talk to you all soon and I hope I am welcomed back after a few years away.

GDay Grant. Congrats on being back on two wheels. I agree that the K bikes are a bargain, sounds like you got a good'un. What can you buy for that money these days?
Any chance of seeing you at Wee Jasper Anzac Day weekend?
Bike or jalopy welcome!

Gidday Fellas,

Thanks for the replies.

Yes should be a bit of fun, last night I started the big clean, and the first thing I will need is a service manual / book "Clymers have a good name for these I think? or maybe a downloaded version?

Oils look good, no smoke on start up when cold or no choke required on start up either which is a good sign.

I should not of sold my bloody BMW helmet as I cannot even go for an illegal unregistered ride around the block.

Enjoy the weekend.

Gidday Fellas,

Well my Sunday morning started nice and early, my kids were up and getting ready to go and do their thing with friends and my wife and I were just having a cruisey day at home as planned, so I swung open the shed door with a hot coffee in my hand and just stood there looking at the bike, "Hmmm I know bugger all about you" was what went through my head as I took a long hot sip of my white n one.....Ahhh

I know some people have branded and put them in the bag labelled in big red letters, plain, boring and bland looking machines and yes the personality of them is somewhat lacking compared to the rugged and cheeky looking early "R" models with those distinctive finned pots hanging out each side, but sometimes a little slice of boring is a good thing and if I can get this bike to safely take me from A to B and back to A again in comfort and with a smile on my face but also with the least amount of fuss and worry then that will do me just fine and I'll be more than happy with my new "green machine".

Electrical issues was what previous owner categorized this bike as having, "Mate I just gave up with the speedo not working".....but what I heard was "BARGAIN"!! and "FUCK YES!!", this will be a good little winter project, so again for third time with buying a BMW over the Internet, I brought it sight unseen so to speak, well I was looking at photos only.

Anyway with the coffee finished and my dog wondering what the hell I was staring at, I started to remove the seat, tank, plastic fairing in-fills around the tank, the 2 x storage compartments, dash, windscreen, I took photos as I went and finally I had a rather bare looking bike sitting there with only the large fairing remaining on the bike.
I completely removed the old heavy radio from the left side compartment as I do not want it, it comes out easily, so I rolled up the wires, taped them together and repositioned them up under the fairing for a later date if I want to put it back.
I quickly got the feeling that this bike had not been played with that much, yes it was dusty in under the tank and fairing as my other two old beemers were when I got them but all the wires and harness's were laying in place nice and tight bar the earth wire.
I retraced the heated hand grips wire and also the electric screen which were both not working and found lose connections under the dash pad, both now fixed and operating well after a good clean and spray, basically I spent the whole day rechecking wire routes and connections and just cleaning the hell out of everything and by 4pm I had it all looking very nice and newish again.
The front and rear ABS brakes have been disconnected which I wonder should I leave off as I have read mixed reports about the early ASB?? anyone ridden with them?? the switch and ABS lights work on the dash so I will have to look into them and see what is involved in getting them working again, but I personally think the previous owner was looking for the speedo fault and has just undone the sensors.
The speedo sensor on the rear drive had not been off for quite some time which I thought strange if you were looking for a speedo fault, it was very tight, the hex head nut had a little rust and it just had that look about it..... Hmmmm

Anyway a great day it was, I am getting to slowly know my way around this "K" machine which is foreign to me, and the speedo and abs will be sorted asap....
