Running without the $2000 0-ring

Post by Mal S7 »

Despite owning my R100/7 for 19 years I am late to the folk lore of the $2000 o-ring.
Just happen to read up on it the other day. http://www.largiader.com/tech/filters/canister.html

So I had my vernier calipers ready while changing my filter today.

Took the cover off and this is what I saw-

No shim, no o-ring! HTF did I do that!! Hmmmmm when did I even change that last ..... hangover ? dementia :? ... actually I don't ever recall using a shim, ever, but I always did use the o-ring.

So I have covered a few thousand kms at least with no shim and no o-ring, it seems without problem (?) Oil pressure light goes out when the bike starts. Engine with a bzillion kms is quiet as it ever was.

How?

Could it really be ...

No need for a shim iffen yer don't have an o-ring Mal.
Most likely.......no shim caused the o-ring to be destroyed by the canister end, and is now on the bottom of the sump.

Maybe the o-ring fell out just yesterday? I'd go with that and ask no more questions. :?

Buy a shim.

Didn't you hear? These bikes don't need lubricant. At least not in the gearbox. You can go 30 or more miles with each gearbox change!

Did the o-ring stick to the cover? It's hard to tell in the photo, but is that the o-ring inside the canister near the base, somewhat shredded?

You may have been getting partial pressure, but certainly no filtering...the oil will just find the easiest path to the sump which is around the outside edges of the canister.

I'm allways worried when someone reminds me of this... Now - what years of bikes have this issue? I've never bothered with it on my '74 /6, but maybe I should?

Cheers!
