Luftmeister gauges

I have a 76 R/90 with a luftmeister fairing what gauges were installed in this fairing? Thanks

Anything you want. If one had spares, they'd put in a BMW voltmeter and clock as with the S, RS, and RT fairings.

Ah yeah, brings back fond memories Ranydy.
My RS moto meter clock broke a long while ago so I took it out and put a cuckoo clock in from memory.
Someone from the ancient forum will pick me up if I'm wrong.

You could put in any gauges of the right diameter, I have fitted an oil temperature guage from a 90s Audi to my R90/6, guage senders of the right thread are available to replace the sump plug.

I'm only really doing it for the bling as the guage will not give any much more than an indication of oil temperature.

Typical instruments were voltmeter and clock...when I got my /7 (I'm second owner), the left was the voltmeter and the right was the clock. Here's the left and right side views of the cockpit (from a 1977 brochure):

From all the ads, it appears that the gauges didn't come standard...they were owner add-ons.

Thanks I have an older VDO clock that I will fit to it,a voltage meter sounds good also.

One gauge you'll want for sure is a voltmeter. It tells you a lot about the status of your charging system.

Tip: With the lights on and the engine spinning at, say, 2,500 RPM, and with a charged battery and known good charging system, I paint a small white dot on the glass at the needle position. Since there's a significant voltage drop between the battery and the volmeter the absolute volts aren't as important to know. You just want to be able to compare what the voltmeter is reading now vs what it read when you painted the dot.

As for the other hole, I agree with others. Put in the gauge that will amuse you the most as you ride the bike. Too bad there's not an easy way to indicate fuel level. But if you have a good trip odometer and you zero it everytime you fill the tank, you don't really need it. Oil pressure would be fun to watch, though hard to plumb. Or if you like talking to people you could put in a boost pressure gauge.

On my Lufty mit voltmeter, I ran the leads direct to the battery (at least the positive side; negative to frame ground) in order to avoid the situation Ken mentions. The stock location for plugging it in is "downstream" so there's typically 0.5 to 0.75v difference. Even if you don't have the paint dot, measure the battery voltage directly with a meter, then just make the mental note to add the difference to the fairing meter. I added a waterproof switch so I can turn my voltmeter off whenever the bike is not running, thus reducing the slight drain that it would cause.
